Photo project ideas to kick off the new year.

Photography projects are great way to improve your skills, develop a style and hone in on what is important to you.

What you focus on expands so having one or two projects on the go force you to look for images each day. The more you look the more you see!

There are a number of ways to do this and it will depend on factors like:

  • time constraints
  • location
  • gear

Often people get hung up on finding the right model, lighting or location but the beauty of photo projects is to simplify your photography to one task

A photo project doesn’t need to be time consuming it can take as little as 5 minutes a day. Or you may focus on one image per month

In fact if you make the task as simple as possible you are more likely to succeed

Not every photo is going to be a masterpiece. If 1 out of every 20 are good then you are doing really well

Aim for 10 great images out of every 365 and that is 10 more images than you have if you do nothing!

Here are a few suggestions

1. Day in the life project

  • A day at the office
  • In a factory
  • Your hometown
  • A family
  • A special event e.g. sporting event/birthday

2. Same time each day
Wherever you are stop and take a photo at 11.11 or 3am or 7a.m

3. Same thing every day for a year or more

  • Selfie a day

  • Cats
  • Men in their sheds

7. Pick a lens

  • 50mm project
  • 24mm project

8. Pick a style
Use constraints

9. Stranger project

  • One stranger a day or week or month
  • Remember to get their stories

Niche this down further
