Dear Nikon, we need to talk…

Dear Nikon,

We need to talk.

I’m not sure if you remember me, we met in the summer of ‘85. I was young and inexperienced and you were, well you know, Nikon, the cool kid on the block.

I fell in love that day and remained fiercely loyal for the next 18 years. We did great things together but my needs changed and I moved on.

It’s been over 30 years since that first time with you Nikon, and I’ve gone on to build a successful career as a photographer. One of the things I love most about being an artist is the fact that the celebration of excellence is gender neutral.

In my lifetime I have been inspired and influenced by hundreds of photographers from all over the world. These have included fashion, street, portrait and commercial photographers. I’m inspired by the work and then I want to learn about the person behind the work and their process.

The reason I bring this up with you Nikon is I’m confused by a recent image you posted on your social media to promote the launch of your new camera, the D850.

In the photo you assembled a group of 32 photographers to be ambassadors for the camera. The part I don’t understand is, where are all the women in this photo? Did the photographer accidently crop them out? Are they at the back and I just can’t see them? Did you forget to invite them?

An ambassador is someone who represents all the photographers who use your cameras. By choosing to only represent the male photographers you are only sharing half the story.

That would be like listening to an orchestra and only hearing the horn section. I want to hear the strings too.

P.S.

How to direct and pose like a pro
