Lighting with Gridspots

Don’t underestimate the gridspot. This light modifier will make portraits pop without modifying your background.

One of Gina’s favourite light modifiers is the humble grid. It’s kind of like the poor cousin of the beauty dish.

A gridspot modifier will control the spread of light and gives you the ability to pop a small dook of light into your model’s face or any area in an image that needs a lift.

In this tutorial, Gina will show you:

  • how she shoots with gridspots for her portrait photography
  • her editing technique for removing an assistant or lightstand using layer masks
  • why this humble tool belongs in your photography arsenal.
